A proposal in the Riviera Maya can be many things — sunrise on an empty beach, a cenote at midday, a candlelit terrace looking over the sea. Here are the places I quietly keep coming back to, and what each one is best for.
Playa del Carmen at sunrise. The light is soft, the beach is almost empty, and the rose-petal setup catches the first warm sun. My favourite for surprise proposals: easy to scout, easy to hide, easy to leave the moment intact.
Tulum jungle and ruins. Layered, textural, dramatic. Best for a proposal that feels like the beginning of a story rather than a postcard — and for couples already planning a longer Tulum trip.
A quiet cove north of Cancún. For couples who want zero crowds and a wide horizon. We arrive early, set up out of sight, and capture the whole thing as it unfolds.
Cenotes. Cinematic, surprising, completely unlike the beach proposals everyone else has done. We pick a cenote that gives privacy at our chosen hour.
Cozumel and the islands. Quieter still, with light that holds late. Worth the small extra logistics for couples who want true seclusion.
Whichever spot you choose, the rule is the same: I scout in advance, dress to blend in with the other beachgoers, and you never have to point me out. The only surprise is the ring.
