Gay and lesbian wedding photography in the Riviera Maya: a planning guide
I photograph love, and gay and lesbian couples are as welcome on my calendar as anyone else. This is a plain guide to planning a same-sex wedding or elopement on the Riviera Maya - where couples marry along this coast, the legal-versus-symbolic question, and what an editorial LGBTQ+ wedding day actually looks like here.
Is the Riviera Maya LGBTQ-friendly? Yes. Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancún are among the most established LGBTQ-friendly destinations in Latin America, with a long-standing same-sex destination-wedding scene and a community of venues, planners, hotels and celebrants who run these weddings routinely.
The legal question, simply. Same-sex marriage has been legal in every Mexican state since October 2022, including Quintana Roo, which contains Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. That gives you two clean paths: a legal civil ceremony in Quintana Roo, often handled in Cancún, or - what most destination couples choose - the legal paperwork done at home and a symbolic ceremony on the beach here. Both are common, and your planner or venue will steer you to the one that fits.
Where gay and lesbian couples marry on this coast. Tulum suits couples who want a jungle-meets-beach, slightly bohemian editorial look. Playa del Carmen offers the widest range of hotel-style beach venues. Cancún and the quieter Costa Mujeres have the established resorts. Isla Mujeres is the slow-island option, with Playa Norte sunset ceremonies a particular favourite. Cozumel and the freshwater lagoon at Bacalar are quieter alternatives again.
Elopements. A gay or lesbian elopement here can be just the two of you, a celebrant and a witness, on an empty stretch of sand at sunrise - the whole day is yours, with no guest list to manage. It is one of my favourite formats to photograph, because nothing is performed; it is simply the two of you.
What the day looks like. The format is the same as any wedding - getting ready, the ceremony, the people, portraits, the celebration - shot calmly and unobtrusively, with gentle direction only for portraits. Your pacing, your structure, your traditions. I work in English and Spanish, and a celebrant can run the ceremony in either language or both.
