Isla Mujeres photographer: couples, proposals and Playa Norte sessions
Isla Mujeres is one of my favourite places to photograph on the entire coast, and it is worth the ferry. This is a short guide for couples thinking about an Isla Mujeres session - the turquoise light at Playa Norte, the early-morning window before the day-boats, and the spots I keep returning to.
Why Isla. The water at Playa Norte, the long calm beach at the north tip of the island, holds a turquoise you do not quite believe from photographs until you stand in it - shallow, sheltered, and clean enough that it reads bright even on an overcast morning. As an Isla Mujeres photographer I cross from Cancún regularly and time every session to the softest light.
The morning window. The ferries from Cancún start early, but the first day-boats do not really arrive until mid-morning, so the stretch of empty beach and clean light runs from sunrise to about nine. That is when I shoot couples and proposals on Playa Norte - close to the shoreline first, then east along the public beach or up to Punta Norte for the deepest turquoise as the boats arrive.
Couples and proposals. The calm north tip makes a barefoot proposal feel like the easiest thing in the world - I scout in advance, blend in with the other beachgoers, and capture the walk, the knee and the yes without you ever having to point me out. Beyond Playa Norte. The colour-block streets in the centro give a few minutes of urban texture if you want something other than beach; Punta Sur at the south end has cliffs, a lighthouse and the Ixchel ruins for a completely different frame. Sunset on Playa Norte is its own event - the beach faces west, so the sun drops straight into the water and the colour holds for twenty minutes after.
Getting there. Isla Mujeres is a fifteen-to-twenty-minute ferry from Puerto Juárez just north of Cancún, with departures roughly every thirty minutes from early morning. Many couples base in Cancún or Playa and come over for a single morning; if you are staying on the island, we simply walk to Playa Norte.
Best months. December through April is the cool, dry season with the calmest water; February and March are the most reliable. Playa Norte stays sheltered and usually clean even when the east coast catches sargassum in the summer months, and weekday mornings are noticeably quieter than weekends.
